Planar YUV The following formats contains a full size Y plane followed by 1 or 2 planes for UV: I420, I422, I444, I400, NV21, NV12, I400 The size (subsampling) of the UV varies.

The next example converts a 32-bit RGB image to a YV12 image. This example shows how to handle a planar YUV format. (YV12 is a planar 4:2:0 format.) In this example, the function maintains three separate pointers for the three planes in the target image. However, the basic approach is the same as the previous example.

When video is stored digitally in a YUV colorspace, Luma and Chroma information can be stored either interleaved to keep individual pixel components together or as planes, keeping individual Frame components together. Planar Formats store all the luma information for a frame, followed by all the information for one chroma Channel (U or V), and then the information for the other chroma channel.
Roughly speaking, Y is the brightness (or “luma”) component, and U and V are the color components. pygame’s YUV overlay takes in a triplet of bytes (strings in py2.x) containing the YUV data and displays it. Packed formats store all of the values for one pixel together in memory. Planar formats separate each component out into a separate array. Thus a planar YUV format will have all of the Y values stored contiguously in one array, the U values in another, and the V values in a third.
The conversion from BGR to YUV is supported by cuda. (YUV 444 packed). But I was not able to convert BGR to YV12 or IYUV.
